Game Day Ready: How to Dress Your Dog for College Football Season

by Beth Simpson on Aug 10, 2026

Your dog has no opinion about the playoff picture. What your dog cares about: the whole family in one backyard, a grill going, and a decent chance somebody drops a bratwurst. In other words, dogs were built for college football Saturdays — the only thing missing is the wardrobe.

Around here, game day is a family event, and the four-legged family members come along for all of it — the tailgate, the watch party, the Saturday market run before kickoff. This guide covers how to put together a dog game day outfit that actually works: comfortable in early-season Georgia heat, secure enough for a crowded yard, and readable from across the cul-de-sac.

Why a collar and bandana beat a jersey

Most college football gear for dogs falls into two camps: clothes your dog wears, and gear your dog wears. The costume-y jersey is the classic of the first camp, and it photographs beautifully for about four minutes. Then the Georgia afternoon does what Georgia afternoons do, and the dog spends the rest of the day telling you, in dog, that this was a mistake.

For most dogs, most Saturdays, the second camp wins. Here's why:

  • Heat is the big one. Kickoff weekend arrives in early September, when Georgia is still fully summer. Dogs cool off by panting, and a snug polyester jersey traps warmth exactly where they need to shed it.
  • Freedom of movement matters. Jerseys bunch behind elbows, ride up over hips, and snag on lawn chairs. A collar and bandana move with the dog through every fetch, zoomie, and nap.
  • Wearability wins the long game. Most dogs forget a bandana exists within a minute of putting it on. Very few forget a jersey — and a dog spending the second quarter wriggling out of clothes is not having a good game day.

The honest trade-off: a jersey does look more official in photos. So use it that way. Jersey on for the picture, jersey off for the afternoon, with a team collar for dogs plus a game day bandana carrying the colors the rest of the day.

Building the dog game day outfit, layer by layer

A good dog game day outfit works like a good tailgate spread: a reliable base, a couple of things layered on top, and nothing that needs constant supervision.

Start with a team collar

The collar is the base layer, and the right team collar for dogs is one they can wear all week, not just Saturdays. The collars in our Team Gear collection are everyday collars first and statements second, and each one runs $29.99.

For the Bulldog faithful — in this town, that's most of you — there are four ways to go: the classic UGA Red Team Collar, the UGA Pink Team Collar for a softer take on fandom, the UGA Bulldog Collar in black with a quick-release buckle, and the UGA Camo Team Collar for households where football season and hunting season share a calendar.

Layer a game day bandana over it

The B Sisters Team Bandana ($15.99) is handmade, ties right over the collar, and is cut to fit dogs and cats alike. The bandana is the workhorse of the whole look — visible from across the yard, light enough for the heat, and off in two seconds when your dog is done being festive.

Add a bowtie for the formal types

Some dogs are bowtie dogs. You already know if you have one. For those, the Handmade Team Bowtie ($24.99) brings school pride with a little polish — right for watch parties, family photos, and any dog whose entire personality is "distinguished." Like the bandana, it's made for dogs and cats both.

Finish with something to do

An outfit doesn't keep a dog busy; a job does. The Team Tennis Ball Tug Toy ($14.99) gives your dog an assignment during a slow third quarter and gives the kids a halftime activity that isn't asking for more chips.

Every fanbase gets a collar

Georgia is the hometown team, no argument from us. But this stretch of metro Atlanta is transplant country, and a fall Saturday downtown means Tech loyalists, Alabama households, Tennessee orange, and at least one flag you didn't see coming. College football gear for dogs shouldn't assume everyone bleeds red and black — so the lineup doesn't.

  • Georgia Tech: the Georgia Tech Blue Team Collar, for the household that stayed loyal to the Flats.
  • Alabama: the Alabama Team Collar, also available in Alabama pink.
  • Auburn: the Auburn Navy/Orange Team Collar, for the other side of the Iron Bowl.
  • Tennessee: the Tennessee Team Collar — that orange is visible from space, which is the point.
  • Ole Miss: the Ole Miss Team Collar, for the Grove faithful far from the Grove.
  • Florida: the Florida Gators Collar.
  • Florida State: the Florida State Team Collar.
  • Clemson: the Clemson Team Collar.
  • South Carolina: the South Carolina Team Collar.

All of them are $29.99, and the full lineup lives in the Team Gear collection. Divided households, take heart: a dog with two collars is a diplomat. Alternate Saturdays, or let the dog wear whichever team won last week.

No logo? Match your colors instead

Maybe your school isn't in the lineup yet, or you want the whole crew coordinated without buying licensed everything. Good news: from tailgate distance, color does nearly all the work. A logo is a close-up detail; a color scheme reads across a parking lot.

So raid what you already own. A red collar under a black bandana says Georgia without a single G. Orange and white says Tennessee, navy and orange says Auburn, garnet and black says South Carolina. Put one team color on the collar and the other on the bandana, and everybody at the tailgate will make the call correctly — though crimson households and red households will both tell you those are not the same color, and they're right.

Comfort and safety before kickoff

Style is the fun part. These four checks are the part that matters:

  • Respect the September heat. Early-season games happen in what Georgia still considers summer. Keep water and shade within reach, give your dog breaks away from the crowd, and mind hot pavement on the walk over — our guide to summer paw safety for Atlanta dogs applies straight through September.
  • Measure before you order. A team collar for dogs should sit snug enough to stay put, with room to slide two flat fingers underneath. Take an actual neck measurement — here's how to measure your dog's neck for a collar — rather than guessing from breed or weight.
  • Pick hardware that suits your dog. A quick-release buckle makes gear swaps painless; some dogs do better with other setups. Our breakdown of martingale, buckle, and quick-release collars walks through the trade-offs.
  • ID tags stay on. Game day means open gates, propped doors, and distracted guests. If you're switching to a team collar for the day, move the tags over before the first guest arrives — a dressed-up dog with no ID is a risk no outfit is worth.

A quick word on cats

Team spirit is not a dogs-only event. The same handmade team bandana is sized to fit cats, and the bowtie was made for both species from the start. A cat in a game day bandana at a watch party is a power move; a cat in a full outfit is a negotiation you will lose.

Cat rules are simple: short sessions, supervised wear, and the cat gets final approval. You'll know where you stand within about ninety seconds.

Game day FAQ

Should my dog wear a jersey or a bandana on game day?

For most dogs, a bandana layered over a team collar is the better call. Early-season Georgia heat makes a jersey an extra layer your dog has to pant through, while a bandana shows your colors without trapping warmth. If you love the jersey look, use it for a quick photo, then switch to the bandana for the rest of the day.

How do I know what size team collar to order?

Measure around your dog's neck where the collar naturally sits, then check that the fit leaves room to slide two flat fingers underneath. Use a soft measuring tape and measure before you order rather than guessing from breed or weight — team collars size the same way everyday collars do.

Can cats wear game day gear too?

Yes. The handmade team bandana and the handmade team bowtie are both made to fit cats as well as dogs. Keep first wears short and supervised, and let your cat cast the deciding vote on whether team spirit is happening this Saturday.

Is it too hot for a dog game day outfit in early September?

A collar and a lightweight bandana are fine for most dogs, even in early-September Georgia heat — that's a big reason we steer people away from heavier layers like jerseys. Keep shade and water close, build in breaks away from the action, and take the gear off if you notice heavy panting or restlessness.

However your Saturdays shape up this fall, we'd love to help you get the dog — and the cat — dressed for them. Come see the team collars and bandanas in person at our booth at the Alpharetta Farmers Market most Saturdays on Main Street in downtown Alpharetta, or browse the Team Gear collection online whenever it suits you. No rush and no pressure; kickoff weekend arrives in early September, and there's plenty of season after that.
